A concert in aid of a group campaigning to improve the quality of the River Swale raised £1,000.

The event, entitled, "Songs for a Fragile World" was staged by The Station Singers at St Mary's Church, Richmond, to support Save Our Swale.

A spokesperson for the group said: "It was a brilliant evening of song enjoyed by many local people and supporters. The music for the evening, chosen by musical director Carol Gedye, took an environmental theme and ranged widely across many music styles.

"A highlight was when the audience joined in with ‘Beautiful Dale,’ a song written about the beauty of Swaledale.

"Another high point was the singing by the joint choirs of a selection of powerful songs, ‘Yanamamo’, about deforestation in the Amazon basin. The Station Singers were pleased to welcome the librettist Anne Conlon as an honoured guest.

"All in all it was a very special evening in which the community came together to raise money for this important cause."
