A popular greengrocer and flower shop has won a top industry award and the satisfaction of knowing it's the best in the UK after landing a prize-accolade.

The aptly named The Greengrocer in Thirsk attended the Farm Shop & Deli Show Retail Awards 2024 on Monday (April 29) and beat competition from across the UK to take home the coveted 'Greengrocer' category prize.

Winning the award on Monday, The Greengrocer were among some of the UK’s best-loved specialist retailers, pillars of their respective communities and champions of great produce and sustainable practice - with the awards supposed to celebrate the UK's farm shops.

Judging took place last November, where an esteemed panel of judges came together in person at Fortnum & Mason in London for a day of deliberations and decisions - where they decided that The Greengrocer should win the top prize.

Earlier this year, various businesses were shortlisted in category finalists, including Baker; Butcher, Cheesemonger; Delicatessen, Farm Shop Large, Farm Shop Small, Fishmonger, Food Hall, Greengrocer, Online Business and Independent local shop/Village store.

They cover seven UK regions: Anglia, Midlands, North England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South England and Wales.

Elsewhere in the nominations in the region, Broom House Farm Shop, Durham was nominated in the butcher category, Yolk Farm, Boroughbridge was nominated in the farm shop large category, and Farm Gate Farm Shop, Easingwold was nominated in the farm shop small category - but were unsuccessful on the day.

Judge Matt Whelan, MD Fieldfare who champions the Retailer Awards, tells us: “We are delighted to champion the Farm Shop & Deli Show Retailer Awards. What a great experience to be a member of the judging panel! Having the opportunity to see so many fantastic independent retailers, reviewing the many approaches they take to delivering a wonderful experience for their shoppers, was both a pleasure and challenge!”
